On 30 April 2026, Istanbul Commerce University’s Zero Waste Community and the Department of Textile and Fashion Design organized an Upcycling Workshop, offering discarded materials a second life through creative design. The event brought together sustainability and innovation while encouraging students to rethink waste as a valuable resource rather than something to be discarded. Through this collaborative initiative, participants discovered how everyday waste materials can be transformed into meaningful design objects.

The workshop attracted strong participation from students across the university. Participants worked with end-of-life textile products, fabric remnants, and various waste materials, exploring their potential for reuse and creative transformation. Students from the Department of Textile and Fashion Design played an active role throughout the process, while members of the Zero Waste Community contributed their environmental awareness and sustainability perspective. As a result, old denim garments were transformed into bags, and fabric scraps were redesigned as contemporary accessories.
Rather than relying on theoretical instruction, the workshop emphasized experiential learning. Participants engaged directly with materials, experimenting with different ways of repurposing textile waste. Using simple tools such as scissors and needles, they explored the creative potential of each material while collaboratively addressing technical challenges encountered during the design process. This hands-on approach enabled students to experience upcycling not merely as a concept, but as a practical and accessible method of sustainable production.

All products created during the workshop were produced exclusively from waste materials, demonstrating tangible examples of the zero-waste philosophy in action. The resulting designs highlighted how environmental responsibility and creative expression can coexist within contemporary design practices. Beyond developing technical skills, the workshop fostered environmental awareness and encouraged participants to consider how items within their own wardrobes could be reimagined and reused.
The workshop served as an important platform for promoting sustainable design principles and circular economy practices within the university community. By bringing together students, academics, and sustainability advocates, the event demonstrated how interdisciplinary collaboration can generate innovative responses to environmental challenges. Participants gained valuable insights into responsible consumption, resource efficiency, and the role of design in reducing waste.

The Upcycling Workshop reinforced Istanbul Commerce University’s commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and creative education. Through practical engagement and collaborative learning, students were empowered to develop environmentally conscious design solutions while contributing to a broader culture of sustainable living on campus. The success of the event has inspired plans for future workshops and initiatives that will continue to expand awareness of sustainable production and responsible consumption practices.
This initiative exemplifies how higher education institutions can play an active role in advancing sustainability by integrating environmental awareness, creativity, and hands-on learning experiences into student life.
