In our era, where visuality plays a dominant role in shaping the perception of reality, it is certain that cinema marks an important turning point. Over its approximately 120 years of development, film, like other art forms, has evolved, transforming in parallel with social and technological advances, diversifying by relating itself to other communication media. The Cinema Master’s Program, opened within the Visual Communication Design Department of the Faculty of Communication at Istanbul Ticaret University, aims to examine and question this process in all its aspects.

The Cinema Master’s Program aims to train researchers who can analyze and investigate societal development and offer original contributions to social change and development processes. In order to understand, analyze, and guide rapidly changing and transforming social realities connected to globalization, it is important to have original approaches to the historical development and contemporary character of culture and art. For this purpose, a program is proposed in which research on the social, intellectual, and aesthetic issues of cinema will be conducted. In this program, where cinema will be examined as an art, an institutionalized industry, a philosophical method, and a universal cultural phenomenon, approaches within film theory will be critically questioned.

While Istanbul Ticaret University continues its contribution to science through national and international research, projects, and publications, it also continuously updates and renews its curricula to create and develop the ideal of qualified personnel needed by the country by utilizing opportunities provided by information technologies, monitoring, understanding, interpreting, testing applications of science and technology at an international level, and contributing to society. In this regard, the Cinema Master’s Program envisages analyzing the structural impacts of transformations in cinema technologies and digital film applications on cinema, as well as producing scientific studies on the development of digital cinema in Turkey. The program also addresses ethical and aesthetic questions posed by cinema, while offering a critical perspective on both world cinema and the development processes of Turkish cinema history. Thus, Cinema Master’s Program students are expected to analyze cinema’s place in social change and development within a globalizing world; to question cinema in light of the historical development and contemporary qualities of culture and art; to investigate the social, intellectual, and aesthetic issues of cinema; to evaluate developments in cinema technologies alongside cinema’s contemporary structure; to critically examine the historical development of cinema in Turkey; and to discuss contemporary Turkish cinema’s identity as an intellectual, aesthetic, and cultural issue by comparing it with significant examples from world cinema.
