The aim of our Computer Engineering PhD program is to train future scientists and create knowledge and technological advancements capable of addressing global challenges. Our research is transferred to industry through Technopark, thereby adding value to both national and global economies.
Research in computer engineering generally focuses on three main areas: methodology, software, and hardware development. New methods developed to solve problems are subsequently transformed into software and hardware. Since the focus of computer engineering today is on developing efficient systems, research objectives include creating simple algorithms and implementing compact and cost-effective hardware and software solutions.
As computers have become integral to every aspect of daily life, research topics in this field are highly diverse. The research areas of our Computer Engineering program can be categorized under Computer Graphics, Computer Networks, Artificial Intelligence, Embedded Systems, Image Processing, and Distributed Systems. Since the topics are generally drawn from real-life scenarios, the likelihood of research finding practical applications is high, which further motivates our researchers.
Our Computer Engineering PhD program aims to equip candidates with a master’s degree with the ability to deeply analyze scientific phenomena through research and produce effective solutions. The program consists of two phases: coursework and thesis. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical-Electronics Engineering or Industrial Engineering, a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Physics, or a master’s degree from a thesis-based program in the Institute of Science can apply to our Computer Engineering program. The broad eligibility reflects the multidisciplinary approach of our Faculty of Engineering and Design’s diverse academic staff.
Pursuant to the Graduate Education and Training Regulation dated April 20, 2016, students who were enrolled in or graduated from non-thesis master’s programs before February 6, 2013, may apply to PhD programs. Those enrolled in or graduated from non-thesis master’s programs after February 6, 2013, are not eligible to apply to PhD programs.

Pursuant to our University Senate Decision dated November 7, 2023, and numbered 2023/283:
As of the Fall Semester of the 2023-2024 Academic Year, pursuant to Article 34, Clause 5 of the Higher Education Council Graduate Education and Training Regulation dated April 20, 2016, doctoral students who have not taken the mandatory “Scientific Research Methods and Ethics” course at the master’s level must take this course from master’s programs, and it will be counted toward their mandatory course load.
The preparatory courses and their number are determined during the interview based on the student’s situation. Courses are taken from the undergraduate program and conducted in the language of that program. Preparatory courses are non-credit.
PhD Courses
For students with a master’s degree, the program consists of at least eight courses (minimum 24 credits), a seminar, a qualifying exam, a thesis proposal, thesis work, and a publication requirement.
