Written by Dr. Erkan Turan, lecturer at Istanbul Commerce University Faculty of Communication, “News Practices: The book titled “From Theory to Practice” has taken its place on the shelves. Published by Eğitim Publishing House, the book contains important findings and determinations on news practices in television broadcasting.
In the book, where television is defined as ‘a screen that manages to create a perception of reality in society’, different windows are opened to some concepts used in journalism practices.
The book explains with examples how “5N 1K”, which is the content element of the news, is divided into multiple questions while gathering information and writing the news, and how the concept of “5N 1K” is only the key and more questions are needed to create the whole news.
The book also includes some concepts that have a place in practice such as “explicit news value”, “implicit news value”, “professional and social perspective in news value”, “components of news definition”, “news grading”.
Analyzing television journalism with its rules and concepts written on paper, the book emphasizes that from the moment the live television broadcast begins, there may be moments when no writing and rules on paper have any validity. It is stated that those who produce news for live broadcasting on television should handle the news production process with a dynamic understanding against situations that change at any moment.
