The certification training entitled “Industrial Property Rights: Trademark, Design and Patent” organized by TICARET in partnership with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Institution attracted great attention. The two-day training was held simultaneously in Küçükyalı and Sütlüce campuses.
Istanbul Ticaret University Leadership and Entrepreneurship Application and Research Center and Technology Transfer Office (TTO) held a training on “Industrial Property Rights: Trademark, Design and Patent” simultaneously on both the Sütlüce and Küçükyalı Campuses with the contributions of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Institution (TURKPATENT). Mr. Cemil Başpınar, President of TURKPATENT, also attended the training and made a presentation.
The training program started with the opening speech of Rector Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu. Prof. Dr. Oğurlu pointed out that entrepreneurship gained importance in almost every field in today’s world, and, that in parallel, the importance of brand and patent has also increased, and emphasized the necessity of being informed on this subject.
At the start of the training program moderated by Prof. Dr. Yusuf Balcı, Director of Istanbul Ticaret University Leadership and Entrepreneurship Application and Research Center, TURKPATENT President Mr. Cemil Başpınar made a presentation on the basic concepts of intellectual property and industrial property, the industrial property system in our country, the duties and responsibilities of TURKPATENT, Turkey’s industrial property performance in recent years, incentives and supports provided in the field of industrial property, entrepreneurship, innovative entrepreneurship, the role of industrial property in entrepreneurship, and advantages of industrial property rights for entrepreneurs.
“INNOVATIVE IDEAS CAN ONLY BE PROTECTED BY A STRONG SYSTEM”
Mr. Başpınar pointed out that TURKPATENT is one of the institutions with the highest number of industrial property applications in Europe and the world, and said: “According to the World Intellectual Property Indicators Report published by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Turkey ranks 14th in patent applications, 7th in trademark applications and 4th in design applications in the world. In this respect, fast and high quality management of the registration process is among the priorities of TURKPATENT.”
Mr. Başpınar stated that new products and production processes pertaining to enterprises should be protected with strong mechanisms, otherwise their competitors will be able to copy and use the said innovations and even head off the entrepreneurs by making improvements on the innovations they copy. In this context, Mr. Başpınar emphasized that innovations can only be protected by strong industrial property systems, and has said:
“Industrial property right first protects your products and services, which are the result of your efforts and creativity, against unauthorized use and copying by others. In addition, it can also prevent competitors from entering the market concurrently with your company. In this way, it gives you a competitive advantage in the market environment where competition is already at a high level. In other words, it ties your competitors’ hands and helps maximize your R&D earnings and competitive advantage.”
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY-INTENSIVE SECTORS ACCOUNT FOR 47 PERCENT OF THE EU’S GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT
Referring to the report prepared jointly by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO) and published last month, analyzing the intellectual property intensive sectors, Mr. Başpınar stated that intellectual property rights contributed significantly to the European Economy. Mr. Başpınar said that, between 2017 and 2019, 40 percent of all employment in the EU was provided by intellectual property-intensive sectors, intellectual property intensive sectors accounted for 47 percent of the annual gross domestic product of the EU, and companies operating in intellectual property-intensive industries pay 41 percent more to their employees than companies in other industries. Mr. Başpınar said that Turkey provides many incentives and supports in the field of industrial property as in every field.
