Prof. Dr. John L. Esposito, an American professor of international relations and one of the important Islamic researchers of recent years, attended the Science and Society Meetings organized by Istanbul Ticaret University.
The guest of the 36th Science and Society Meetings will be Prof. Dr. John L. Esposito, known for his works on the Islamic world and Islamophobia. Prof. Dr. Esposito will make a presentation entitled “The World of Islam and the West: Conflicting Perceptions and Images”.
Prof. Dr. Esposito has come to the fore in recent years with his works on the Islamic world, Islamophobia and Islam. Prof. Dr. Esposito, who frequently emphasizes the conflicts between the West and the Islamic world in his works, states that while it was thought that the 21st century would be the century of Islam, the 9/11 attacks took the relations between the Islamic world and the West 20 years back. Prof. Dr. Esposito argues that the regression in the relations between the Islamic world and the West after the 9/11 attacks will be “very difficult” to fix, and it may take “a generation” to do so.
Prof. Dr. Esposito, who gave various conferences in Istanbul before, established the Center for Muslim – Christian Mutual Understanding in 1993 within the body of Georgetown University. Stating that the aim of establishing the Center was to ensure that Islam is not perceived as a threat in the West, Prof. Dr. Esposito noted that the perception of the West is very bad in the Islamic world today, while Islam is perceived as a threat in the West and Islamophobia is at its peak.
Prof. Dr. Esposito will present his arguments on the reciprocal perceptions of the West and the Islamic world, why these perceptions conflict and the practices that will end the conflicts within the scope of the speech he will make as part of the Science and Society Meetings of Istanbul Ticaret University.
In addition, Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu will make an opening speech at the conference to be moderated by Dr. Kamala Valiyeva, Faculty Member of the Political Science and International Relations Department of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Istanbul Ticaret University. The conference will be broadcast on the university’s Youtube account on Tuesday, January 17th, 2023 at 19.00.
