Our Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr. Asuman Yılmaz, who made the opening speech, reminded in her speech that the Treaty of Lausanne, the 100th anniversary of which was July 24th, 2023, has been the subject of discussions that have been going on for years in our country. Prof. Dr. Yılmaz stated that the Treaty of Lausanne was accepted as the Founding Document of the Republic of Türkiye, and Türkiye’s borders were largely drawn with this treaty, and underlined that this treaty was one of the treaties that ended the World War I.
THE PANEL WILL CONTRIBUTE TO UNDERSTANDING THE TREATY OF LAUSANNE
Noting that the Treaty of Lausanne has been the subject of ongoing discussions in our country for many years, Prof. Dr. Yılmaz said: “While some circles in Türkiye describe the Treaty of Lausanne as a victory, a great success, other circles consider it a defeat. The aim of our panel is to understand this important document better and learn more about it. In this context, our panel will primarily focus on the conditions that led to the Treaty of Lausanne, its signing process and its political, economic and cultural effects at the time it was signed.”
ITS EFFECTS ON THE PRESENT TODAY WERE ALSO DISCUSSED
The panel, in which the Treaty of Lausanne was addressed from the perspective of international law and its reflections and effects on today’s world were also discussed, ended with the Fidan Certificate presented to the panelists by Prof. Dr. Yılmaz.
