Architectural Lighting Workshop: Lighting Of Urban Elements

An Architectural Lighting Workshop on “Lighting of the Urban Elements” was organized by the Architecture Department of the Faculty of Architecture and Design for high school students. Students who registered from different cities participated in the online event, which was held on two consecutive Saturdays on March 19th and March 26th, 2022. The objective of this event, which included both a seminar and workshop, is to raise the awareness of the participating students so that they can perceive the objects and urban elements in their environment and protect their historical and cultural values.

On the first day of the event, first, Faculty Member and Head of the Architecture Department Dr. Leyla Suri gave information about the objective and content of the workshop. Subsequently, Dr. Tuba Baskan delivered a seminar titled “Lighting of the Urban Architectural Elements”. In the seminar, the importance of urban lighting was emphasized in the context of the need to ensure the visibility of the architectural elements in the cities in night conditions where there is no daylight, the continuity of the city life, and the creation of a comfortable and safe environment for the users. Fundamental approaches to urban element lighting in indoor and outdoor areas such as building/building facades, parks-gardens, pedestrian paths, monuments, fountains, etc. were narrated. In addition, techniques for the implementation of the lighting design approach in question were suggested by the participating instructors. Students were asked to review the current state of a lit or unlit urban element located in their environment, and to prepare a lighting design approach (concept) for the improvement of its lighting (if negative).

On the second day of the event, the students presented their lighting design approach that they had prepared in line with the information they were given a week ago. The event ended with the evaluations of the participating instructors on the students’ concept studies. Ms. Gizem Öztürk and Ms. Özge Büşra Ergül, who are working as Research Assistants at the Department of Architecture, provided support in the preparation and execution of the Workshop. At the end of the event, students were awarded certificates of participation and surprise gifts that have the logo of our university have been handed out.
