Dr. Ece Güneren Tütüncü, founder of Myraang and Ma Mulier brands, participated in the Sector Meetings and shared her career from the chemical industry to textile and fashion, and her branding process. With her inspiring story from the family business to the international arena, Dr. Tütüncü gave important career advice to the students.
Dr. Ece Güneren Tütüncük, founder of Myraang and Ma Mulier brands, participated in the event titled Branding in Textile and Ready-to-Wear Sector and Its Effects on Export, which was organised for the first time by Istanbul Commerce University International Trade and Finance Department under the name of “Sector Meetings”. The event, moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Başak Erdem, Head of the Department of International Trade and Finance, was attended by academicians and students.
OUR FAMILY BUSINESS WAS MY FATHER’S PLAYGROUND
Speaking at the event, Dr. Tütüncü said that while she decided to continue her career in the chemical industry, where she had a bachelor’s degree, started working as a temporary manager in the company after her father went on a business trip for a week and said, “My father was producing pleats for many textile companies of the family company, which was established in 1993. He said that he would go abroad for a week and said, “You come and take care of the work.” Thus, I entered the workplace. As I disciplined my father’s work and increased efficiency, I decided to change my career to textiles. Since our family business was my father’s playground, I always had the dream of creating my own brand. I realized this dream by establishing Myraang in 2015 and Ma Mulier women’s clothing brands in 2021.”
I FOUNDED MY FIRST BRAND WITH THE SUPPORT OF MY TEACHERS AND MY FAMILY
Stating that she did her master’s degree in Strategic Marketing and Brand Management before establishing her first brand, Dr. Ece Tütüncü said, “I established my first brand with the support of my university professors and my family. I can say that especially my father’s curiosity and knowledge about machinery was the biggest advantage for me. While doing contract manufacturing, brands were showing their past designs and asking us to prepare a new collection. For this reason, we were quite experienced in preparing collections before establishing our brand. We are currently exporting to more than 20 countries in the world, especially the USA.”
ISTANBUL COMMERCE UNIVERSITY IS MY UNIVERSITY
Noting that she completed her doctorate in International Trade at our university before establishing her second brand, Dr. Tütüncü said: “Istanbul Commerce University is my university. I took lessons most of the time. I founded my baby brand Ma Mulier after my doctorate. My first brand is working on wholesale and my second brand is working on retail. We currently carry out processes such as embroidery, printing and laser cutting of the products of the two brands in-house. We can survive in the industry because they produce design products rather than plain products. We are facing China, which keeps the cost to a minimum. We develop design products to survive in the industry. We appeal to young modern women.”
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR US THAT EMPLOYEES CAN EXPRESS THEMSELVES
Stating that it is very important for their employees to express themselves in their brands, Dr. Tütüncü said, “It is extremely important for us to be able to express themselves when hiring someone. Secondly, I want to work with a friendly employee. Almost half of my day is spent with my colleagues at work. Therefore, smiling candidates are always advantageous for me during the recruitment process. Employees also need to think analytically. What I mean here is that every job applicant receives the same education on average. For me, one needs to think analytically to solve a problem. My advice to those who want to advance their careers in this sector is to improve your analytical thinking skills, be happy and be able to express yourself.”
