“MONEY” from Ancient Ages to the Future

The talk titled “MONEY from Ancient Ages to the Future”, organized by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Political Science and International Relations, was held at the Sütlüce Campus with the presentation of Financial Advisor, Independent Auditor and Author Mr. Dursun Ali Yaz. The talk started with the opening speech of Department Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uğur Yasin Asal. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asal emphasized the importance of the talk in terms of understanding the role of money, drawing attention to the decisive role of money in political science and international relations.

START BY UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CASH AND MONEY

In the talk, Mr. Dursun Ali Yaz drew attention to the effects of money on politics and relations with governments, ways of organizing social life and myths. Sharing his important views on the function of money and its role in the civilization cycle of societies, Mr. Yaz said: “We talk about money as if it is one thing, while in fact so many things are involved in the concept of money. First of all, we need to know that there is a huge difference between cash and money. I believe that when you understand this difference, you will be much more comfortable in both your business and private life.”

A UNIVERSITY DEGREE IS ALSO MONEY

Mr. Yaz said the following about the difference between cash and money: “What decreases when you spend is cash, and what increases is money. This is the clearest distinction between cash and money. What you call cash are the banknotes, paper money and coins in your pocket. Cash is tangible, you can hold it with your hand or see it with your eyes, and you can dispose of it as you wish. The cost of printing and producing money is very cheap. On the other hand, the generation of money is very difficult, requires a lot of effort, and is a very long-term process. For example, the degrees you will receive from this university are money for you. You can buy cash with money, but you cannot buy money with cash. While cash is tangible, money is intangible. Cash can be counted, separated, divided, added, yet their value does not change.”

“EVERYTHING THAT IS VALUABLE HAS A NUMBER PRINTED ON IT”

Stating that everything that is valuable has a number printed on it and expresses a value, Mr. Yaz said: “You cannot determine the number or price of something valuable. This semantic mind has been around for thousands of years and is reflected in our laws.” Stating that cash has always been something that mortals have been interested in, while immortals have always been interested in money, Mr. Yaz also reminded that, while the Federal Reserve, the Central Bank of United States (US), had printed around a total of 1 trillion US dollars in cash until the economic crisis in 2008, it printed 8 trillion US dollars in the crisis that started in 2009. Mr. Yaz also noted that since cash is manageable and money is valuable, they become a part of the relations between politics, economics and accounting sciences. Following the question-answer session, the talk was completed with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation to Mr. Dursun Ali Yaz by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Said Yazıcıoğlu.
