The opening ceremony of the 22nd academic year of Istanbul Ticaret University was held at the Sütlüce Campus Conference Hall. Chairman of Istanbul Ticaret University Board of Trustees Mr. Öztürk Oran, Istanbul Ticaret University Rector Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu, academicians and administrative staff of the university attended the 22nd Academic Year Opening Ceremony. The Ceremony, which started with a moment of silence and the singing of National Anthem, continued with protocol speeches.
ITO PRESIDENT ŞEKİP AVDAGİÇ: I WISH ALL THE BEST TO EVERYONE IN THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR
Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) President Mr. Şekip Avdagic sent a letter to be read during the opening ceremony, as he could not attend to the ceremony due to a pre-scheduled conflicting event. Avdagiç’s letter read, “I am sorry that I could not attend the opening ceremony of the new academic year even though I very much wanted to do so due to a pre-scheduled conflicting event. I wish the new academic year to be auspicious for our academicians, administrative staff and students alike.”
ÖZTÜRK ORAN: WE SWELL WITH PRIDE WITH EVERY SUCCESS OUR UNIVERSITY HAS ACHIEVED
Mr. Öztürk Oran, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Istanbul Ticaret University, expressed his happiness for being present at the opening of the new academic year. Mr. Oran said, “We swell with pride with every success our university has achieved. These successes, which have continued with an increasing momentum in recent years, not only break new grounds in education, but also strengthen the bridges between the academes and business life.”
Noting that the management was proactive during the pandemic period, Mr. Oran said, “Our university administration has acted proactively since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, and has shown a very successful process management, distinguishing itself from other universities. We did not interrupt education when life in the world was interrupted. Although the physical possibilities have narrowed, we have opened the virtual windows of opportunity to the widest.” Indicating that the university achieved a record occupancy rate in the registration period for the 2022-2023 academic year, Mr. Oran said: “This year, we surpassed the averages of foundation universities with an occupancy rate of 96.5 percent. Moreover, we achieved this rate although we increased our quotas. We ranked second among the foundation universities in terms of the number of publications published in national peer-reviewed journals.” Mr. Oran congratulated all the academic and administrative staff who contributed to these successes.
Addressing university students in his speech, Mr. Oran said, “Academic education does not consist of only lectures, exams or assignments. The successes achieved by our students in various cultural and sports activities in the past years shows how eager our students are in this regard. For hundreds of years, universities have been centers where not only higher education, but also socialization, cultural activities, sports and art flourish, and free thought sprouts. You too, with the passion of youth and learning new things, take part in clubs, tell the administrators if there are any shortcomings, and send us your requests for different activities, courses and activities. Don’t hesitate. I wish you all successful, beautiful and pleasant years in this distinguished institution until you graduate.”
“YOU HAVE OPPORTUNITIES LIKE NO OTHER UNIVERSITY”
At the end of his speech, Mr. Oran, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Istanbul Ticaret University, has said: “We always stand by our academicians, administrators and students. Our Board of Trustees and nearly 700 thousand members of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce stand by your side. As a member of such a large family, you have opportunities like no other university. Science and technology, theory and practice, university and business world meet here under this roof.” Mr. Oran concluded his speech by wishing that the new academic year will be beneficial and successful for everyone.
“WE HAVE BECOME ONE OF THE MOST ESTABLISHED FOUNDATION UNIVERSITIES OF THE COUNTRY”
Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu, Rector of Istanbul Ticaret University, who gave a speech at the ceremony, stated that they are excited to enter their 22nd academic year, and said: “We have left behind 21 years since the establishment of our university, and we are now entering our 22nd year. During the course of the academic journey we started with 73 students in 2001, we have become one of the most established foundation universities in the country today. We especially emphasize that we had only 73 students back then because today we have more than 20 thousand graduates. Today, some of our graduates are senior managers in the public or private sector, while others create employment and added value for the country by establishing their own initiatives. Our current number of students is around 10 thousand and 1200 of them are international students. In addition, with over 3,000 graduate students, our university trains academicians and qualified experts for academic circles and the business world.”
“OUR UNIVERSITY DRAWS ATTENTION WITH ITS PROGRESS IN RECENT YEARS”
Stating that Istanbul Ticaret University has been attracting attention with its development in recent years, Rector Prof. Dr. Oğurlu has said: “Our university draws attention with its progress in recent years. This situation is reflected in both general university reports and foundation university reports of YÖK (Council of Higher Education). According to the 2021 YÖK Universities Report, our university ranks 2nd among 208 State and Foundation Universities in terms of the Number of Publications Published in National Peer-Reviewed Journals per Faculty Member, 4th in terms of both the Number of Students Participating in Technopolis or Technology Transfer Office (TTO) Projects, and the Rate of Institutional Open Access Scientific Publications. In addition, our university ranks 7th among foundation universities in terms of export revenues and 8th in terms of the number of graduate students. Last year, our university ranked 2nd among 77 foundation universities in terms of the ratio of incoming and outgoing students through lateral transfer. This year, many more students came to our university through lateral transfer. As a result of the central placement exam and additional placements, our occupancy rate reached 98 percent this year. Academically, the reputation and quality of our university is increasing with each passing day. We are constantly strengthening our academic staff with important names. The degrees and achievements of our students in competitions in both cultural and sports and academic fields always make us proud.”
At the end of his speech, Prof. Dr. Oğurlu has said, “I believe that in the 22nd academic year, we will carry out productive and successful academic studies with the joint work of our university academicians, administrators and students. I would like to take this opportunity to end my speech and thank the board of trustees and the management of ITO for their contributions to our university. I welcome our new students to our university and wish all our students and academicians a successful academic year.”
Following the 22nd Year Academic Opening Ceremony, an Academic Board Meeting was held in the conference hall with the participation of Rector Prof. Dr. Oğurlu, vice-rectors, deans, institute directors and academicians.
