GIMAC 13 (13th Global Islamic Marketing Conference) was held at Istanbul Ticaret University Sütlüce Campus between October 18th and 20th, 2022 by the International Islamic Marketing Association with the contributions of Istanbul Ticaret University Faculty of Business Administration. The opening speeches of the conference were made by Prof. Dr. Hani Dmour, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Obeidat, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Elçin Aykaç Alp and Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration Prof. Dr. Ömer Torlak. Many local and foreign academicians attended the conference to present their studies on the subject. Presentations on many topics such as entrepreneur marketing from an Islamic perspective, structural equation model workshop, better marketing for a better world, supply chain and logistics of halal goods, marketing and education metaverse, Islamic marketing towards a better future, marketing towards a holistic approach and the need for an authentic perspective in Islamic marketing were made by expert academicians.
Making an opening speech at the event, Co-Chairman of the Conference and Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration Prof. Dr. Ömer Torlak mentioned the importance and development of Islamic marketing, and emphasized that what distinguishes Islamic marketing from traditional marketing is not just an addition of an adjective in front of the marketing concept, but it is the value and virtue-oriented approach that should be the focus of Islamic marketing efforts. Prof. Dr. Torlak thanked the Co-Chairman of the Conference Prof. Dr. Baker Ahmad Alserhan for the great interest in the conference as well as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cihat Köksal, Dr. Mehmet Bayırlı and Dr. Hasan Terzi for organizing and contributing to the conference. Prof. Dr. Torlak also thanked all our staff, particularly the Rector Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu, for the support given by the Rectorate. In her opening speech, Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Elçin Aykaç Alp also thanked all who contributed to the organization of the event along with the participants who attended the event and wished the conference to be successful.
Dr. Mahmut Sami İşlek, who took the floor at the opening session, discussed in detail what should be understood from Islamic marketing. In his presentation, Dr. İşlek stated that Islamic marketing can only find its full meaning through understanding Islamic principles, rules and institutions and by taking these principles, rules and institutions as a guide in practice, and that in-depth studies should be conducted instead of eclectic studies to that effect.
Additionally, Dr. Muhammet Ali Tiltay made a presentation about his meta-analysis in which he evaluated the publications in the field of Islamic marketing. In the presentation, Dr. Tiltay stated that his study focused on the Islamic marketing studies of academicians from universities based in Indonesia and Malaysia, and reminded that Islamic marketing studies of academicians from universities based in Europe and America are also at a level that cannot be underestimated.
Prof. Dr. Remzi Altunışık stated that, in order to understand Islamic marketing, Islamic marketing studies should be carried out with a deeper understanding beyond the existing approaches. Prof. Dr. Altunışık emphasized that the philosophical and ontological dimensions of Islamic marketing have not been discussed much in relevant studies to date.
Emphasizing the importance of more valuable marketing for a better world in his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Ashraf Attia from New York State University explained through examples that better marketing practices can result in a nicer and fairer world.
After the opening speeches, the Conference continued with sessions held in English, Turkish and Arabic languages for two days. 80 participants from 20 different countries contributed to the Conference with their papers.
