General Information

Department of Economics (English)

The Department of Economics (English) aims to educate individuals who possess a strong command of the theoretical and philosophical foundations of economics; who can analyze the behavior of economic agents; who are able to accurately interpret economic developments in today’s world, where technological transformation is taking place at a dizzying pace, and who can conduct economic analyses using up-to-date technological tools and methods in order to help shape these developments.

The program seeks to train students who can monitor micro- and macroeconomic processes and their changes at both national and international levels; interpret economic data; and better understand social life by establishing connections between economics and related disciplines such as politics, history, philosophy, law, and sociology. To achieve these goals, education and training are provided within a curriculum framework designed to equip students with the quantitative and qualitative knowledge, skills, and competencies required by the twenty-first century.

During the first two years of the four-year undergraduate program, students take courses covering the fundamental principles of economics. In the following years, courses such as econometrics, mathematics, statistics, and research methods in the social sciences are added, along with courses that address different dimensions of economics and its intersections with other disciplines, including political economy, economic history, and economic sociology.

As of 2022, within the scope of the Program for Concentration in Artificial Intelligence in Social Systems and Processes, a series of courses on artificial intelligence algorithms, programming, and simulation paradigms has been incorporated into the curriculum. This enriched and innovative program is designed to provide graduates with high-value, functional “problem-solving” and “situation-improvement” skills, enabling them to find their place in the twenty-first-century world and adapt to the digital transformation brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

When updating the courses and course contents included in the Department of Economics (English) curriculum, the recommendations of the departmental advisory board—comprising academics and experts from the private and public sectors—as well as the opinions of students, are taken into consideration.

By reinforcing their academic background through participation in projects conducted by research and application centers related to the department, as well as in academic and social responsibility activities organized by the department’s student community, economics students are educated as individuals with high entrepreneurial capacity, strong teamwork skills, the ability to create and share common value, develop projects, cope with challenges, and produce effective solutions.

Graduates of the Department of Economics (English) enjoy broad employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors. They may work in banks, investment companies, stock exchanges, and other financial institutions operating in the banking and capital markets as economists, analysts, brokers, bankers, inspectors, specialists, or managers. In the public sector, they may be employed at institutions such as the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the Ministry of Trade, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT), the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK), and the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF). Graduates may also find employment in international organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
