Workshop on “The Role of the EU on Women’s Development and National Gender Policies" April 6, 2018 Organised by Istanbul Ticaret University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Sociology, funded by the European Commission through its Jean Monnet Program The link between the women’s empowerment and political, economic, social and cultural development is set in the European context in the Article 119 of the Treaty of Rome in 1957. This norm has been carried to the today’s European Union (EU) which set equality between women and men as a fundamental value of the EU. The EU’s gender policies are developed over time through directives, regulations and awareness raising and gender mainstreaming programs which are aimed at promoting gender equality in a wide range of areas. For the EU, gender equality is a political as well as an economic objective. It is considered to be a crucial factor for sustainable and inclusive development. While the need for the gender equality policies is studied and discussed among academics and practitioners, the EU perspective has escaped attention of the scholarly inquiry even though the EU has been the main norm agent/promoter of gender equality policies in various policy areas in Europe and beyond. That said, achieving gender equality both at the EU level and the national level is still an objective to be achieved in a wide range of areas. Nevertheless, little research has been done on assessing and discussing the EU’s ability, role and impact to trigger a change in the national gender policies and their implementation. The workshop aims to contribute to gender and development studies by including the EU dimension. Therefore, it seeks to contribute to the academic research on the role of the EU in women’s development via gender policies by pooling down insights from gender, EU and development studies. The key objective of the workshop is to initiate in-depth discussions around the questions of “How does the EU promote gender equality?”, "How does the EU transform the lives of girls and women?", “To what extent and under what conditions the EU gender policy template is effective in promoting women's empowerment and establishing an institutional culture based on gender equality in the EU and countries included in enlargement process?”, “What are the urgent gender inequality issues and main challenges in Turkey?”, “How can policymakers, practitioners and civil society achieve gender equality for sustainable development?”, “How can we encourage and achieve collaboration between these stakeholders for greater gender equality?”, We invite academics, practitioners, and representatives of political parties and civil society organisations working on gender and/or the European politics and the general public to participate in the workshop. Proposals with an interdisciplinary focus are welcome including Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration, Gender Studies, Education, Philosophy and Social Work. We invite theoretical, methodological, and empirical papers which may cover but are not limited to the following themes:
This workshop is organised as part of the Jean Monnet Module entitled as ‘Women’s Development and the EU's Impact on Gender Policies (WDEGP)’ funded by the European Commission. Therefore, there will be no submission fees. Technological support will be provided for those who may not be able to travel to Istanbul. Webinar sessions and online presentation option will be available for those who cannot physically attend the workshop. The presentations can be either in English or Turkish. Preliminary proposals for a book project were submitted to major academic publishers. Selected papers in Turkish will be included in the book proposal submitted to a leading national publisher, while selected papers in English will be included in the one submitted to an international academic publisher. The workshop will be held on April 6, 2018 at Istanbul Ticaret University Sütlüce Campus. Abstracts (max 400 words) should be sent to the following email addresses by March 25th, 2018. Dr. Rahime Süleymanoğlu-Kürüm, rahimesu@gmail.com Associate Member at Nottingham Interdisciplinary Centre of Economic and Political Research, University of Nottingham, UK; Guest Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Istanbul Ticaret University.
